About Kalkan

This peaceful Lycian Coastal resort and fishing town is very close to a rich collection of historic and ancient sites, areas of outstanding natural beauty and stunning beaches, whilst being far enough away from crowds and mass tourism to provide an exclusive and up market location for your dream holiday home.  Visitors to Kalkan come back again and again falling in love with the Ottoman charm of the town, the friendliness of the people and the beauty of Kalkan Bay.

The old town of Kalkan is a network of tiny cobbled streets that lead down to the colourful harbour.  Along these streets you will find a myriad of small shops selling spices, carpets, ceramics, jewelery, shoes, leather goods and clothes.  The Ottoman history of the town is evident in the architecture with wooden balconies swathed with bougainvillea overhanging each street.

The town boasts over one hundred restaurants, many with roof top terraces that allow you to sit and gaze out over the beautiful bay to watch to sun go down while you enjoy a cool glass of the local white wine or a smooth glass of smokey red.  Dishes include traditional Turkish fare such as Imam Bayildi (Swooning Imam)  and Yogurtlu Kebap but also cater for a more Anglicised palate offering peppered steak, chicken stuffed with figs and a range of glorious seafood.

Kalkan is the perfect base from which to enjoy the local beaches or beach clubs with platforms that allow you to dive directly into the crystal clear turquoise waters.  The towns blue flag pebble strewn beach is clean and offers a manificent view of the bay, turn round and you get an equally magnificent view of the stunning Toros mountains that circle Kalkan.  If it is sand that you are looking for then a ten minute journey up the coast will bring you to the dramatic Kaputas beach situated at the foot of a deep ravine.  Alternatively a bit further away and in the opposite direction is Patara beach, eighteen kilometres of golden sand and rolling surf, recently voted one of the ten best beaches in the world in the Sunday Times Magazine.  Alternatively you can use one of the local beach clubs with terraces cut into the rock providing direct entry to the sea and a waiter to bring a cold beer directly to your sunbed!

Down at the harbour you can book a day cruise on one of the many Turkish Gulets which provide a relaxing way to explore the rocky local coastline.  The boat will occasionally anchor allowing you the chance to swim in the warm, blue waters or snorkel to see shoals of tiny silver fish.  Lunch is provided and usually consists of fish caught on the trip together with traditional Turkish salads and meze all washed down with a cool drink!

The region is alive with history and trips can be booked with local agents or you can hire a car from us and plan your own adventure.  The ancient Lycian capital city of Xanthos, the sunken city of Kekova, the intriguing Tlos and the abandoned village of Kayakoya are all within reach of Kalkan.  In addition there is also plenty of opportunity for walking and hiking along the famous Lycian Way, one of the 'The Worlds Ten Best Walks'.

Whether you are looking for acitivity and adventure or relaxation and sun soaking Kalkan can provide, this is the perfect location for that holiday home you have been dreaming of!
